Mastering the Art of the Perfect Pour-Over

Mastering the Art of the Perfect Pour-Over

There's something wonderfully ritualistic about the process of making pour-over coffee. The slow, deliberate pour of water over freshly ground beans, the enticing aroma that fills the room, and the anticipation as each drop of rich coffee drips into the waiting cup—it's a sensory experience.

So, grab your favorite mug and let's dive into the world of pour-over coffee brewing.

What you'll need for a 6 Cup Pour-Over:

  • A gram scale
  • 37 grams of freshly ground coffee at a medium grind
  • 672 grams of filtered water
  • A pour-over dripper and coffee decanter
    • or a pour-over coffee maker as seen in our images below
  • A #6 size paper filter
  • A gooseneck water kettle

Total Brewing Time: Between 4 and 5 minutes

Now, Let's Get Started!

Step 1: Bring Your Water to a Boil.

We recommend getting your water to a temperature of around 200℉

Step 2: Place a filter in the dripper and set on top of the decanter.

Rinse your filter once with hot water to prevent any papery taste to your brew. Make sure to dump this extra liquid out of your cup!

Step 3: Place the Grounds into the Filter & Bloom the Grounds.

Always start with an initial bloom. This is the act of dampening your coffee bed just enough to provoke the release of carbon dioxide resulting in a much tastier cup. For this process, pour 80 grams of water in a slow circular motion for about 15 seconds and then allow another 30 seconds for the water to settle and bubble.

Step 4: Pour the remaining water into the dripper

Continue to slowly pour the remaining 592 grams of hot water over the coffee over the next 4 minutes and 30 seconds to 5 minutes, ensuring the brew basket remains halfway filled with water throughout the brewing process.

Step 5: Remove the Dripper and Enjoy!

Once the coffee has finished dripping, remove the dripper, give your mug a gentle swirl to mix the flavors, and savor every sip of your freshly brewed pour-over coffee.

There you have it! A step-by-step guide to creating a perfect cup of pour-over coffee right in the comfort of your home. Experiment with different coffee beans, water temperatures, and pouring techniques to find your ideal brew. Happy brewing!
